Giving Tuesday
All my life, I’ve gotten in trouble for one weird thing: being a little too giving. I am completely serious. I cannot tell you how many times my dad got onto me for buying lunch for someone or spending my babysitting money on the kids I babysat for. To this day, if I mention I have lunch plans, the last thing my dad will say to me as I leave is “don’t buy everyone else’s lunch! Save your money!”
Because of this trait, I realize how truly blessed I am. You see, I was able to use my spending money to buy lunch for someone because I was blessed to have such an opportunity. In fact, some may consider me to be quite spoiled. However, others think this is the reason I have gone into development work. I personally think there is truth in both statements, because even though I grew up getting in trouble for being too giving, I am definitely a daddy’s girl and have him wrapped around my finger. All of this “giving” eventually led me to my current position as the Communications Manager for Exponential Education.
Giving Tuesday is coming up in just two short weeks! This day is set aside after Black Friday and Cyber Monday as a day for you to give to a cause you feel passionate about. Over the past few years, I have found that I am personally passionate about education and gender empowerment. These two passions are what led me to work with Exponential Education.
Exponential Education works to empower youth in Ghana through after school programs. We envision a world where each student has equal access and opportunity to academic success. Our initiatives include Peer to Peer tutoring (P2P), Girls Leadership, Empowerment, Action Program (Girls LEAP), Boys for Positive Change (BPC), and Level Up Village (LUV). Each of our programs aims towards giving the students the tools they need to become advocates of change in their own communities.
Girls Leadership, Empowerment, Action Program (Girls LEAP) creates a safe space for girls to discuss community issues that directly affect women, express themselves, and receive leadership development training to strengthen girls’ voices, presence, and priorities within their community.
Boys for Positive Change (BPC) Program helps boys to recognize social norms underlying gender inequality and empower them to become agents of positive change by challenging these norms.
Level Up Village (LUV) Classes are designed to deliver Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) curriculum to our partner schools using accessible materials and promoting problem solving and collaboration. Each class in Ghana is paired with a class in the United States allowing students and teachers to exchange videos letters and ideas.

$10 buys snacks for one term (10 weeks) of a Boys for Positive Change Program
$25 buys one set of books for a Global Conversations LUV class
$50 provieds one school term (10 weeks) of Girls Leadership, Empowerment, Action, Program (Girls LEAP) including snacks, materials, and service project expenses
$100 buys a tablet for use by a JHS student to participate in after school STEAM sessions with American partner schools
